Our Story

How We Got Started

Dance New York was born in 1994 on West 54th Street in NYC.

Originally comprised of 3 partners we developed the first Ballroom studio to cater to the Independent Teacher. 

Professionals came from all over the world to practice, teach, and train at our facility. There we began our first Social Dance Program.  During this span, we took an opportunity to build a Dance New York in Iowa and sold that to our partner.  By the end of our 17-year run we had over 120 competitive and social dance instructors. When the day came to tear down our original location ( the building was getting knocked down) we amicably parted ways with our partner and built again across the street. 

In 2007 we built yet another location closer to home in Westchester County, NY catering more to the Social Dancer.

By 2011 we moved to Michigan to be closer to family.  After free-lancing at local studios for 3 years and commuting back and forth to NY, we chose to open our 5th studio on Forest Ave in Plymouth, MI. This wound up being the perfect location situated between Ann Arbor, Detroit, West Bloomfield, and Dearborn.  This venture has proven to be the most exceptional business offering opportunities for both Social and Competitive students.

In 2020, 'the year of change' proved to be true. With the onset of Covid19 our business took a hard hit with a 6 month mandatory shut down. With the support of our dedicated team of staff and students we managed to sustain by relocating and building studio #6 on Joy Road in Canton, MI.  We appreciate the love and support our beautiful community gave during that challenging time. We are so fortunate to be able to continue dancing with all of you.

We love what we do so much that we want to share our passion for dance along with the quality and expertise we have acquired and make a difference in the lives of others.

Our mission at Dance New York is to provide students of all levels with more than just dance lessons, but a unique experience in which the student can grow both mentally and physically as a dancer. Our highly trained and certified instructors have a wealth of experience in teaching and performing various styles and disciplines.
